BENSON – An 11-mile stretch of N.C. 50
and 21 secondary routes in Johnston County will be repaved beginning later this
summer.
The state Department of Transportation awarded S.T. Wooten Corp. of
Wilson the $4.7 million contract for the road improvements in June.
Under the contract, S.T. Wooten will remove the old pavement and
resurface N.C. 50 between the Sampson-Johnston County line and U.S. 301 in
Benson. The contractor also will resurface 21 secondary routes in Johnston
County, plus 1.3 miles of N.C. 50 in Sampson County between N.C. 55 and the
Johnston County line.
In all, 35 miles of roadway pavement will be resurfaced.
Work is scheduled to start later this summer. The contractor has
until December 2019 to finish the projects.
This was one of 25 road and bridge contracts recently awarded by
NCDOT. Per state law, they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project.
The contracts are worth nearly $630 million.
