Upcoming Nightly Durham Freeway Northbound Lane Closures

DURHAM – As the East End Connector project continues to progress, work to widen a bridge will require a brief series of nightly closures on a section of northbound Durham Freeway between Ellis Road (Exit 8) and Briggs Avenue (Exit 10).

From Monday, July 9, to Thursday, July 12, the northbound lanes will be closed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

To detour around the worksite, motorists may use Ellis Road, Northeast Creek Parkway, East Cornwallis Road, and Alston Avenue. This detour ties into the Alston Avenue widening project, which guides motorists to use southbound Durham Freeway to the North Briggs Avenue off-ramp to turn around and use the on-ramp of northbound Durham Freeway.

The East End Connector is a 3.9-mile divided highway that will connect the Durham Freeway to U.S. 70, which is being upgraded to interstate standards between Pleasant Drive and N.C. 98. It will enable drivers to travel non-stop between Interstate 85 in Durham, the freeway, I-40 and U.S. 1 in Cary.

The new highway, expected to be designated Interstate 885, is projected to open in late 2019.
