After Overpass Is Struck in Cumberland County, I-95 North Must Detour

Concrete girders on the N.C. 82 overpass in Cumberland County were damaged today after a truck hauling equipment struck it.

I-95 North to reopen by tonight; N.C. 82 will remain closed

FAYETTEVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed the N.C. 82 (Exit 65) bridge off Interstate 95 and started detouring I-95 northbound traffic around it after a truck hauling logging equipment struck the bridge and damaged it.

Bridge inspectors are still assessing the damage to the concrete girders. NCDOT is detouring traffic so no vehicles pass under the damaged bridge while temporary repairs are being made. Instead, northbound traffic has been reduced to one lane as NCDOT directs motorists to get off at Exit 65, and then re-enter the interstate on the other side of the overpass.

NCDOT officials hope to be able to resume normal traffic conditions on I-95 North by tonight, but the N.C. 82 bridge will be closed indefinitely until permanent repairs can be made.

Information on a detour for N.C. 82 will be posted soon at DriveNC.gov. There, select Cumberland County, then hit the incidents tab to find detour information.
