Lane Closures Coming to I-85 in West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – Overnight lane closures will start next week along Interstate 85 in west Mecklenburg County as part of a $10.6 million improvement project between mile markers 36 and 28.

The contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation to Crowders Construction Company of Charlotte includes using a technique called pavement rehabilitation, which will extend the service life of a nearly 8-mile stretch of the existing roadway by removing any pavement that may be aged, embrittled or cracked.

As part of the project, the pavement thickness may also be increased to strengthen existing sections to accommodate current and future traffic volumes.

Crews will have to close the three right lanes to safely set up equipment and start repairing any trouble spots. The closures will start on I-85 South near the Brookshire Freeway (exit 36) and continue south through the week as work progresses.

The closures will be in place from 8 p.m. Monday, July 23 until 6 a.m. the next day. Weather permitting, the closures will continue each night through Saturday morning, July 28.

Truck traffic coming south on I-85 is encouraged to take the I-485 Inner Loop (exit 48) to I-85 South (exit 10) as an alternate route.

Lane closures will continue to be scheduled as work advances and as weather permits. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2019.
Motorists are encouraged to pay attention when approaching the work zone, obey the posted speed limit, follow posted detours, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
