NCDOT and Hyde County officials cut a ceremonial ribbon Friday on the new Swan Quarter Ferry Terminal
Terminal includes improved facilities for ferry passengers and crews
SWAN QUARTER – N.C. Department of Transportation and Hyde County officials cut the ribbon Friday on a brand new terminal for Swan Quarter ferry operations, a $2 million facility that promises more comfort for both ferry passengers and crews.
The 8,500-square foot building and dormitory is a major upgrade from the old terminal, a cinder block structure that opened shortly after the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route was established in 1977.
Last year, more than 70,000 passengers used the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route.
“Whether it’s doctor’s visits, emergency evacuations or bringing visitors to our businesses, the ferry system is a lifeline for the county,” said Hyde County Manager Kris Noble. “This new building will mean a great deal to this community.”
The new terminal has upgraded restrooms and waiting areas for passengers, and can house as many as two ferry crews, which will make the facility better suited to house emergency operations in the case of an evacuation.
The Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route is the newest of the North Carolina Ferry System’s seven regular routes, established to connect Ocracoke residents with their county government.
