Public Meeting for Proposed Improvements to N.C. 51 in Mecklenburg County

MATTHEWS – The public is invited to provide input on a project now in development aimed at improving traffic flow on N.C. 51 (Matthews Township Parkway) between Sardis Road and Monroe Road/West John Street in Matthews.

The project is part of Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization’s Metropolitan Transportation Plan, and was submitted to the N.C. Department of Transportation for funding consideration under the Strategic Mobility Formula. The project scored well enough in the regional tier to obtain funding.

The Department of Transportation is proposing to widen approximately one mile of N.C. 51 from four to six lanes with a raised median, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, along with intersection improvements at Sardis Road, Fullwood Lane, and Monroe Road/West John Street.

The project also proposes the construction of a partial continuous flow intersection at N.C. 51/Monroe Road/West John Street. This type of design shifts left-turning traffic to the outside of the road, allowing through traffic to move through the middle of the intersection.

A public meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. July 31 at Christ Covenant Church, 800 Fullwood Lane. Interested citizens may attend the meeting at any time, as no formal presentation will be made.

For people who cannot attend the meeting, comments can be submitted in writing, by phone or email through Aug. 31. All comments received will be reviewed and suggestions incorporated as the project design progresses.

More information and a map of the proposed improvements can be found here.
