Upcoming Closure for Section of U.S. 70 in Durham

DURHAM – As the East End Connector project continues to progress, work to switch traffic patterns to a temporary alignment on a section of U.S. 70 will require a one-night closure this Friday night from 8 p.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday. Crews will be working between East End Avenue and N.C. 98.

Because of this traffic switch, the westbound U.S. 70 exit ramp to N.C. 98 will be temporarily closed. Contractors anticipate having the ramp opened by the evening of Thursday, August 1.

Motorists may utilize Cheek Road, the eastbound U.S. 70 on-ramp, and the N.C. 98 exit to detour around the closure.

The East End Connector is a 3.9-mile divided highway that will connect the Durham Freeway to U.S. 70, which is being upgraded to interstate standards between Pleasant Drive and N.C. 98. It will enable drivers to travel non-stop between Interstate 85 in Durham, the freeway, I-40 and U.S. 1 in Cary.

The new highway, expected to be designated Interstate 885, is projected to open in late 2019.
