New Traffic Pattern on Kerr Avenue in Wilmington

Unique approach allows left turns prior to the intersection

WILMINGTON – Drivers traveling on Kerr Avenue at Market Street will soon benefit from a safer and less congested route, thanks to a relatively new approach to traffic management – a Quadrant Roadway Intersection.

A temporary pattern using the quadrant left design was put in place earlier this week. Although left turns from Kerr Avenue to Market Street have been eliminated, northbound motorists can still make left turns on Market Street using Cinema Drive. Southbound motorists on Kerr Avenue can still make left turns on Market Street using the newly constructed Wilmington Avenue Extension.

“We switched to a temporary pattern at Kerr Avenue in order to begin widening on the northwest corner of Kerr Avenue at Market Street,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer Daniel Waugh. “Once completed, the quadrant left design and additional through lanes will ultimately improve safety and reduce congestion.”

Kerr Avenue is being widened from two to four lanes from Martin Luther King Jr Parkway to Randall Parkway.  The project is expected to be completed in early 2019. To learn more about Quadrant Road Intersections and both their safety and congestion reduction benefits, please follow the hyperlink.
