U.S. 64 Bridge Work in Edgecombe County Requires Ramp Closures: Closures start Sunday night

U.S. 64 Bridge Work in Edgecombe County Requires Ramp Closures

An NCDOT contractor is repairing bridge expansion joints, like this one shown on U.S. 64 in the Rocky Mount area, as part of the same work that will close some of the U.S. 64 ramps at Exit 470 next week.

ROCKY MOUNT – A project to preserve two U.S. 64 bridges over N.C. 97 (Atlantic Avenue) in downtown Rocky Mount will require lane reductions and ramp detours overnight next week.

A N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will repair and replace the joints along with other maintenance on the highway’s westbound and eastbound bridges at exit 470. The work will extend the life of the bridges.

The weather-dependent work is scheduled to occur only at night from Sunday through Thursday, Aug. 16. The closures will last from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.

The contractor will start first on the westbound bridge on Sunday night when one of the two lanes is closed. The work zone will require the N.C. 97 on-ramp to U.S. 64 West to be closed. Motorists can alternately enter U.S. 64 West from exit 469.

After the westbound bridge work is completed, the contractor will move to the eastbound bridge, reducing traffic to one lane and closing the on-ramp from U.S. 301 Business (North Church Street) at exit 469. Motorists should use exit 470 to travel U.S. 64 East.

Transportation officials remind motorists to stay alert in the work zone, watch signs for construction information and obey the posted speed limit.
