Road Slated for Maintenance Work Closes Early from Michael; Several Triad Roads Damaged

WINSTON-SALEM - N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews have closed a portion of N.C. 109 in both directions in Davidson County due to storm damage from Hurricane Michael.

“The roadway was slated for work on Monday along the shoulder and wind wall work at a culvert between Gumtree Road and Wallburg Road near Winston-Salem, but Hurricane Michael has left extensive shoulder and pavement damage in this area that has required us to close it now,” said NCDOT Maintenance Engineer John Rhyne.

The roadway will be closed until Oct. 19, weather permitting.

Motorists will be able to detour using Wallburg Road, Gumtree Road and N.C. 109 in both directions.

There are several roads closed across Division 9 in the Triad, which encompasses, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Rowan and Stokes counties.

“Flash flooding, signal outages and downed power lines have left at least two dozen roadways impassable, which will require a lot of attention from our crews today and the days to come,” said Division 9 Engineer Pat Ivey.

Roads across Division 7, which includes Guilford, Alamance, Orange, Caswell and Rockingham counties, have also experienced several adverse weather challenges due to yesterday’s storm.

“At least 60 secondary roads across the area have been closed due to trees that have fallen, standing water, pipe damage and wash outs,” said NCDOT Maintenance Engineer Brad Wall.

“We are accessing those roadways now and will be working through the weekend and weeks to come to make sure roads are safe for drivers,” said Division 7 Engineer Mike Mills.

Drivers are urged to be mindful of roadways prone to flooding as they likely to have been impacted by Hurricane Michael.
