Fuel Tanker Crash Limits Access to I-73 South in Greensboro

GREENSBORO Part of southbound Interstate 73 in Greensboro will be closed until crews can clean up and repair any damage from a Thursday morning crash involving a tractor trailer that was carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel.

The crash occurred on the I-73 South bridge where that interstate meets I-85, south of Greensboro.

As a result, southbound I-73 is closed at I-40 (Exit 212) and traffic is being rerouted to U.S. 220 South, which eventually becomes I-73 South. From U.S. 220 South, drivers can also access I-85 North (Exit 78) and Business 85 South (Exit 79).

Crews are working to clear debris from the crash site before assessing damage to the I-73 bridge.

Depending on results of an inspection, NCDOT hopes to reopen one lane late this evening. It is likely one or two of the three lanes could be closed for several days.
