I-73 Bridge Beams Deemed Safe, Boosting Repair Outlook

GREENSBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation has determined the recent fuel tanker crash and fire on the Interstate 73 South bridge did not harm the steel beams that support the bridge.

Lab testing confirmed preliminary findings that the beams remain structurally sound. The beams are safe for carrying traffic once other repair work around the crash site is complete.

The repair would have likely taken months longer to complete had the beams needed to be replaced.

NCDOT will have a better idea of the timeline and cost of the repair once the contractor for the work, Flatiron Constructors, finalizes plans after the first of the year.

The work will include replacing the deck, barrier wall and bearings in the affected area near the south end of the bridge.

A concrete barrier wall installed Tuesday remains in place, blocking off the left lane and shoulder and allowing traffic to access the other two lanes on the bridge.

Drivers are reminded to be mindful of posted signage and use caution while crews continue to work around the crash site.
