Bridge Project in Lee County to Require Lee Avenue Closure

UPDATED RELEASE: The contractor has had to postpone next week's scheduled closure of a Lee Avenue bridge. A new date has not been established yet, but the bridge may be closing in about two weeks for this project.

THE ORIGINAL RELEASE ON MARCH 1 FOLLOWS:

SANFORD – A project to replace a 65-year-old Lee County bridge on Lee Avenue will require a detour starting Monday, March 5.

Workers will replace the bridge over Gasters Creek, south of Sanford, after the N.C. Department of Transportation last year awarded an $806,426 contract to Dane Construction Inc. of Mooresville.

While remaining safe, the bridge is nearing its useful lifespan. It requires more frequent maintenance and has vehicle weight limits and narrow lanes that do not meet modern traffic needs.

Until the project is completed by this summer, a detour will send traffic onto N.C. 78 (Main Street), Lemon Springs Road and Andrews Road.
