Bridge Replacement Coming to U.S. 601 in Union County

CHARLOTTE – Drivers will soon see a new bridge on U.S. 601 over Clear Creek just north of Brief Road, thanks to a $2.1 million contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The new bridge will be built to the south of the existing bridge, so no offsite detour will be needed. Travel lanes on U.S. 601 will be tied in to the new bridge, then the old one will come down.

Work can start as soon as April 2, and the new bridge should be completed in July 2019, with vegetation establishment wrapping up by the end of next year.

This was one of 16 road and bridge contracts recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. Per state law they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $65.1 million, more than $852,000 under engineer estimates.
