ASHEVILLE — The N.C. Department of Transportation has temporarily
closed a two-lane bridge on Old Linville Road in McDowell County for
precautionary reasons. Recent inspections discovered deterioration beyond
acceptable levels.
Engineers based in Asheville are developing plans to either repair
or replace the 46-year-old bridge over the North Fork Catawba River just south of North Cove.
NCDOT has marked a detour for use by large vehicles and those with
trailers. Motorists travelling north may take American Thread Road to U.S. 221
North and drive seven miles to the north end of Old Linville Road and head
south. Local traffic may use other routes but truck and low-trailer combinations
would likely not clear a railroad crossing at Pitt Station Road.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down in work zones and obey all
posted traffic signs.
