SMITHFIELD – As contractors demolish two bridges, motorists on
Interstate 95 in Johnston County will encounter occasional overnight detours
starting next week.
The first detour is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. on Monday, Jan.
15, for I-95 South at Exit 105 (Bagley Road) near Kenly. Southbound traffic will
use U.S. 301 and Micro Road before re-entering the interstate at Exit 102 in
Micro.
Crews will work overnight until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, as they
finish dismantling the Bizzell Grove Church Road bridge; they will resume the
detour during the same overnight hours on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week,
and possibly Thursday.
To facilitate the demolition, the outside southbound lane will
remain closed between mile markers 102 and 105 during the week of Jan. 15.
Once the crews have finished removing the Bizzell Grove Church Road
bridge, weather permitting, they will start removing the Lizzie Mill Road bridge
over I-95 near Selma. A detour there for I-95 North will begin sometime
overnight the week of Jan. 22, ending by 5 each morning.
Once they have completed work on the northbound side of the
interstate, the crews will move onto the southbound lanes to haul away the rest
of the bridge – work that will require the same overnight detours beginning the
week of Jan. 29.
Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh received a $53.1 million contract from
the N.C. Department of Transportation last fall to resurface I-95 between mile
markers 100 and 107 in Johnston County. The project includes replacing both
58-year-old bridges with longer structures that meet today’s traffic needs and
will accommodate future plans to widen the interstate.
