Details: The N.C. Department of
Transportation will dedicate a section of Interstate 85 in Charlotte from
Interstate 77 (Exit 38) to the I-85 connector (Exit 42) after the late Julius
Chambers.
Born in Mount Gilead in 1936, Chambers founded the first integrated
law firm in North Carolina, working to advocate for civil rights locally and
across the nation. The road naming honors his importance to the advancement of
civil rights and practice of law in North Carolina.
N.C. Board of Transportation Chair Mike Fox will emcee the
ceremony, which will include remarks from Governor Roy Cooper, former USDOT
Secretary Anthony Foxx, NCDOT Chief Deputy Secretary David Howard, Charlotte
Mayor Vi Lyles, Frank Emory of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, and
members of the Chambers family.
