LEXINGTON – N.C. Department of
Transportation contractors will begin work this Spring replacing the N.C. 47 bridge that crosses Flat Swamp Creek between Frank Road
and Young Road near Lexington.
The bridge was closed
Monday, Jan. 22, after a routine inspection revealed significant deterioration
on the beams of the bridge, with repairs costs estimated at over $100,000 and
repair time nearing 30 days.
“Since this aging bridge
has already been scheduled for replacement at a cost of $1.3 million, in an
effort to salvage taxpayer funds, the road will remain closed and demolition is
scheduled in late April or early May with construction lasting about four
months,” said Division Engineer Pat Ivey.
The bridge,
built in 1950, is one of the five following bridges in Davie and Davidson County
that are scheduled for replacement as part of an express design-build
contract:
- N.C. 8 (Davidson County)
- N.C. 47 (Davidson County)
- N.C. 47 (Davidson County)
- Cana Road (Davie County)
- County Line Road (Davie County)
The project is part of the department’s overall bridge program to
improve the condition of the state’s bridges and ensure the safety of drivers
who rely on them.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch
signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed
