NCDOT Selects a Preferred Alternative for the U.S. 158 Roadway Improvement Project in Forsyth and Guilford Counties

TRIAD – The N.C. Department of Transportation reached a milestone this month in selecting a preferred alternative for the much-needed safety U.S. 158 Improvement project between Forsyth and Guilford Counties.

On Wednesday, May 16, NCDOT staff, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, N.C. Division of Water Resources, N.C. Division of Cultural Resources; the Winston-Salem and Greensboro MPO’s and a host of preconstruction stakeholders selected the northern alternative during the final planning meeting at NCDOT headquarters Raleigh.

“We’re excited to announce that the northern bypass alternative was chosen,” said NCDOT Division Seven Engineer Mike Mills “This particular plan will increase the traffic carrying capacity and thus save lives by reducing notable congestion and collision rates along this corridor.”

This $110 million project will widen 18.8 miles of U.S. 158 to multiple lanes from U.S. 421/Business 40 in Winston-Salem to I-73 (old U.S. 220) in Guilford County.

Section A begins just north of U.S. 421/ I-40 Business / N.C. 150 and ends at Belews Creek Road and  Vance Road in Forsyth County. (5.1 miles)
Section B begins at Belews Creek Road and Vance Road in Forsyth County and ends at Anthony Road in Guilford County. (7.2 miles)
Section C begins at Anthony Road in Guilford County and ends at I-73 in Guilford County. (6.5 miles)

Construction on Section A begins in 2022. The final construction date on Section C is pending state funding. Each section will take at least two years to construct.
