Nighttime Closures Scheduled for Final Demolition Work of 4th Street Bridge on Business 40 (U.S. 421 Salem Parkway)

WINSTON-SALEM — N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will close a portion of Business 40 in Winston-Salem for the completion of the 4th Street bridge demolition that started last month and was delayed due to weather.

The inside westbound lane of Business 40 will close at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway. Then, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., all traffic has to detour off Business 40.

The roadway will reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 26. The schedule will repeat eastbound on Thursday night and work will end; weather permitting by 6 a.m. Friday morning.

“The closure is needed for the protection of workers and drivers as the demolition requires crews to work inches away from the roadway,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Pat Ivey.

Travelers can detour using Cloverdale, 1st Street and Peters Creek Parkway in each direction.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert, slow down in the work zone and obey the posted speed limit.
