Public Input Welcomed for Proposed U.S. 158 Widening in Camden, Currituck Counties

BARCO - The N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting the public to an informal-style meeting Tuesday, June 5, to learn more about the proposed widening of U.S. Highway 158 between N.C. Highway 34 in Camden County and N.C. 168 in Currituck County.

The purpose of the project is to increase the highway’s carrying capacity to support both regional transportation needs and hurricane evacuation.

The meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Currituck Cooperative Extension Center, located at 120 Community Way in Barco. Interested citizens may attend the meeting at any time, as no formal presentations will be made.  NCDOT and consultant staff will be on hand to provide information on the project, answer questions, and receive comments.

Maps of the proposed project are available on the NCDOT Public Meetings website at http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/publicmeetings/.They can also be found at the NCDOT office in Elizabeth City at 1929 North Road Street, the Currituck County Planning Department at 153 Courthouse Road in Currituck, and the Camden County Planning Department at 117 North N.C. 343 in Camden.

Residents who can’t attend the meeting can get information and the chance to submit comments that will be considered as the project planning is finalized by contacting Jamille Robbins, NCDOT Public Involvement, Community Studies & Visualization group leader, at jarobbins@ncdot.gov, 1598 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699 or (919) 707-6085. Comments may be submitted through June 20.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for persons who wish to participate in the meeting. Anyone requiring special services should contact Lauren Putnam at (919) 707-6072 or lnputnam1@ncdot.gov as early as possible so arrangements can be made.

Persons who speak Spanish and have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English may receive interpretive services upon request prior to the meeting by calling 1-800-481-6494.
