Roads in Montgomery, Richmond Counties to be Repaved

ROCKINGHAM – Two sections of N.C. 109 Business (Eldorado Street), one section of N.C. 24/27 in Montgomery County and two sections of N.C. 73 in Richmond and Montgomery counties will be resurfaced soon.

The state’s Department of Transportation recently awarded a $4.9 million contract to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Rocky Mount to resurface 33 miles of roadways in the two counties.

N.C. 73 will get the most work in the contract: a 12-mile segment between the Montgomery County line and U.S. 220 will be resurfaced, as well a 4.5-mile leg of the state highway between Moore County and U.S. 220 in Richmond County.

The work also includes seven sections of these secondary routes:

  • Montgomery County: River Road, Love Joy Road and Apple Orchard Road; and
  • Richmond County: Cartledge Creek Road, Grassy Island Road, Airport Road and Hannah Pickett Road.

The contractor may start work after June 25 and has until August 2019 to complete the paving.

This was one of 18 road, rail and bridge contracts the department recently. Per state law they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $144.4 million.
