Rockslide Closes N.C. 209 Overnight

***UPDATED*** N.C. Department of Transportation crews cleared the slide and opened the highway before 1 a.m.

ASHEVILLE — A short section of N.C. 209 near Waldroup Road in Madison County is closed tonight due to a rockslide.

The slide area, about four miles south of Hot Springs, should be cleared, examined and re-opened in time for the morning commute.

A temporary detour has been established around the slide. Drivers heading north from the Haywood County direction should take N.C. 63 to Bailey Branch Road to U.S. 25/70 Business to U.S. 25/70 to N.C. 209. Motorists travelling south shall take the reverse order.

NCDOT teams are removing the debris from both sides with two excavators and 14 dump trucks carrying the debris to different off-site locations.
