Smoother Roads Coming to Parts of Randolph County

ASHEBORO – Sections of U.S. 421 and U.S. 220 Business are among the roadways in Randolph County to be resurfaced under a new contract

The N.C. Department of Transportation last month awarded a $12.3 million contract to Riley Paving Inc. of Carthage to resurface three miles of U.S. 421 South between the Guilford County line and Shilo/Starmont Road; a 7.4-mile stretch of U.S. 220 Business between Anchor Drive and the U.S. 220/I-73/U-74 interchange; and portions of U.S. 421 between the Old Liberty Road overpass and Willard.

Additionally, sections of 51 secondary roads in the county will be resurfaced, for a total of 65 miles of roadway improvements.

The contractor will start this summer and have a June 2019 deadline.

This was one of 18 road, rail and bridge contracts the department recently approved. Per state law they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $144.4 million.
