BEAUFORT— Residents and business owners of Carteret County now have shorter travel times when the new Turner Street Bridge opens for traffic this weekend.
With this change, one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 is open to traffic as the
Gallants Channel Bridge project moves into its final phase. Once completed in early 2019, the $66 million Gallants Channel Bridge project will provide drivers with a 65-foot high bridge that will never need to open to boat traffic; and a four-lane, divided highway that will be safer and less congested than the previous facility.
“The opening of the Turner Street Bridge at the end of April is a tremendous improvement for anyone traveling in and out of Beaufort,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Preston Hunter.
