GOLDSBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation wants the public’s feedback on a proposal to widen a section of East Ash Street to four lanes on Goldsboro’s east side.
People are invited to look at the preliminary design maps, ask questions and provide comments during an April 23 public meeting. The open house will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at Greenwood Middle School Cafeteria at 3209 E. Ash St. People may attend any time, as no formal presentation will be made.
The Goldsboro Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, whose advisory board includes locally elected officials, requested NCDOT to widen East Ash Street (U.S. 70 Business) between Berkeley Boulevard and U.S 70. The project scored high enough to receive funding and be included in the department’s State Transportation Improvement Program.
The department would widen what is now a three-lane road into four lanes separated by a median. To further improve safety and traffic flow, roundabouts would be constructed at Malloy Street; Oak Forest Road; and Commercial Drive/Meadow Road. Roundabouts reduce the risk of crashes, especially serious ones, because drivers slow down to about 15 mph and travel in one direction when driving through them; the design also eliminates the stop-and-go nature of a conventional intersection.

Comments received by May 8 will be considered toward the final design. Construction is slated to start in 2021.
