Bridge Girder Installation to Shift Traffic Pattern in Havelock

HAVELOCK – Traffic will be shifted on U.S. 70 during the overnight hours as contractors work to install bridge girders for an overpass in Craven County.

On May 21, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., the left lane of U.S. 70 East will be closed starting near the intersection of Hickman Hill Road, and the right lane of U.S. 70 West will be closed starting at the Walmart intersection, west of Catawba Road. A shift will be required for the open westbound lane. This date is weather permitting.

Crews contracted with the N.C. Department of Transportation will set girders over U.S. 70 West as part of the new overpass across the highway into Slocum Gate at MCAS Cherry Point.

Between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. access to Slocum Road and Slocum Gate will not be allowed. The gate will close at 8 p.m. and reopen at its normal time the following morning.

During the closures the contractor may stop all traffic, but for no more than 30 minutes at a time. The contractor would perform this type of closure as a safety precaution.

Motorists should anticipate needing extra time and slow down when approaching and within the work zone.

This work is part of the $24.4 million project to improve the U.S. 70 corridor, including Slocum Gate.
