Changes in Exit Numbers for I-87 Start Next Week

RALEIGH – Drivers using Interstate 87/U.S. 64-264 in Wake County will start seeing a change in signage on the highway next week. As part of the route designation changing the highway to I-87, the exit numbers in both directions between I-440 and Rolesville Road will be changing and the new signs will have the new numbers.

The work is expected to continue through the end of July. The new numbers start in the single digits, while the current exit numbers are in the 400s.

The Federal Highway Administration in 2016 approved the I-87 designation for I-495/U.S. 64/264 east of Raleigh. It will continue on the U.S. 64 path as it splits from U.S. 264 in Zebulon, then go east of I-95, joining U.S. 17 in Williamston and continuing north to Elizabeth City and on into Norfolk.

Some sections of the existing highway were already built to interstate standards and could be signed quickly. Others will get the signage as work is completed to change the highway to those standards over the next two decades.
