Public Meeting on U.S. 64 Improvements in Apex, Cary is this Week

APEX – Residents will have the chance to review plans to improve a stretch of U.S. 64 in southwest Wake County during a public meeting this week.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is working to improve U.S. 64 and intersections between U.S. 1 in Cary and west of Laura Duncan Road in Apex to make the corridor safer and better equipped for handling heavy traffic.

The proposal would widen that section of U.S. 64 to a six-lane freeway. It already carries 40,000-56,000 vehicles per day, with those numbers expected to increase by more than 40% by 2040. The corridor also saw nearly 800 crashes between 2012-16 – nearly twice the state average for similar highways.

Initial options for the project were the subject of a public meeting last year. Public comments from that meeting were taken into consideration as designers came up with a preferred recommendation.  Maps of the plans are available on the NCDOT Public Meetings website.

Those maps will also be on display at the open house-style meeting, set for 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Summit Church, 3000 Lufkin Road in Apex. Project representatives will be on hand to answer questions and receive public comments, which will be taken into consideration as the project develops. Comments may also be submitted by phone or email by May 28.
