U.S. 301 in Cumberland County Requires Two Weekend Closures

A new N.C. 59 bridge is under construction over U.S. 301 in Hope Mills

The new N.C. 59 bridge (foreground) over U.S. 301 will open next year.

HOPE MILLS – Portions of U.S. 301 (I-95 Business) on the north side of the N.C. 59 interchange will close during the next two weekends to allow contract crews to replace a drainage pipe with a larger culvert under the highway.

The drainage improvements are part of an ongoing project by the N.C. Department of Transportation that includes replacing the N.C. 59 bridge over U.S. 301. The larger drainage pipe will allow a higher volume of water to pass safely underneath the road. The wider, taller bridge is being built alongside the existing bridge and is expected to open by the end of 2020.

Here is the schedule for the pipe replacement:

  • Close the northbound lanes of U.S. 301 at the N.C. 59 bridge Aug. 10-11. This closure will include the ramp for N.C. 59 drivers to go north onto U.S. 301.
  • Close the southbound lanes of U.S. 301 at the same exit Aug. 17-18. No ramps will be affected.

The contractor plans to begin around 6 a.m. each Saturday, and the road must be reopened by 6 a.m. the following Monday. Detour signs will be posted for each closure.

The scheduled work depends on the weather, and may be postponed to the following weekend, if it rains.
