RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in

Powell Bill
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is distributing more than $147 million in state street aid to local municipalities, thanks to the Powell Bill.
This year, the program is
helping 508 local governments improve or repairs roads they maintain, along with construction or maintenance of bridges, drainage systems, greenways and sidewalks. Seventy-five percent of the funding is determined by population, while 25 percent is based on the number of locally maintained street miles.
Zero Emissions Vehicle Plan
As part of an executive order from Governor Cooper, the department has
developed a plan to address climate change by reducing emissions and boosting clean energy. The plan was rolled out last week and aims to have 80,000 electric vehicles in the state by 2025. Increasing zero emissions vehicles will enhance North Carolina’s air quality and grow the clean energy economy.
Walk to School Day
Thousands of students, parents, teachers and community members across the state participated in Walk to School Day. The annual event encourages more families to consider getting to school on foot or bike and shares important safety tips.
