HERTFORD – N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will temporarily close U.S. 17 Business (North Church Street) between Hertford and Winfall.
The closure is required to excavate a new sewer manhole near the intersection of North Church and Phelps Streets and will begin on March 9 at 6 a.m.
Barricades will be widely spaced at West Grubb Street to allow Hertford residents to access their properties. In Winfall, the closure will begin at the intersection of U.S. 17 Business (Creek Drive) and N.C. 37 (Winfall Boulevard).
A detour will be put into place, with message signs along U.S. 17 advising motorists of the closure. Work is expected to be complete in one week.
The closure is part of the project to replace the 90-year-old Hertford “S-Bridge” and to improve the causeway north of the bridge. Work on the project began last summer and is expected to be complete in late 2021.
