One Lane Reopens on Damaged Bridge in Rockingham County

MAYODAN – State transportation officials have reopened one lane of a Rockingham County bridge that was struck by an overheight vehicle in January.

A beam supporting the River Road bridge over U.S. 220-311 was damaged in the incident, leading N.C. Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenance staff to close the bridge. Today, the eastbound lane of the bridge reopened with a temporary signal in place to direct traffic.

Repair work is still underway on the westbound side of the bridge, where the damage occurred, and is tentatively expected to last until late April.

Drivers in both directions of River Road and on northbound U.S. 220-311 should slow down when approaching the bridge and be mindful of crews at work.
