Closures Planned for Beltline Widening Project Next Week

RALEIGH — N.C. Department of Transportation crews are planning a series of overnight closures next week as a part of the Interstate 440 Improvements Project.

On Sunday and Monday nights from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m., the ramp from I-440 East to eastbound Western Boulevard (Exit 2A) will close to allow crews to complete work on the new alignment for the ramp and the addition of a temporary branch off of the exit which is to be used when the loop from I-440 East to westbound Western Boulevard (Exit 2B) closes starting Monday night.

A detour will lead drivers to exit at Hillsborough Street (Exit 3), turn right and then take I-440 West back to Western Boulevard.

Beginning Monday at 7 p.m., the loop from I-440 East to westbound Western Boulevard (Exit 2B) will close permanently. At 6 a.m. Tuesday, drivers will begin using the temporary exit that will branch off from Exit 2A.

On Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., I-440 East will close at Jones Franklin Road (Exit 1C) to allow crews to set the girders on the eastern half of the new Melbourne Road bridge over the Beltline. The ramp from Melbourne Road to I-440 East will remain open.

Drivers will take Exit 1C, turn left onto Jones Franklin Road, right onto Western Boulevard and then take the loop back onto I-440 East.

I-440 West will be closed at Western Boulevard on Thursday night from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. to allow crews to set the girders on the western half of the new Melbourne Road bridge over the Beltline.

A detour will direct motorists to take Exit 2B, continue on Western Boulevard to Hillsborough Street, turn left onto Jones Franklin Road, and then take the loop back onto I-440 West.

All work is weather dependent and rain dates are planned for the following night.

Motorists need to pay attention near these work zones and anticipate needing a little extra time for the detours.
