East Garner Road Bridge over I-40 Reopens after Year-Long Closure

RALEIGH – After a year of not being able to do so, drivers can now cross Interstate 40 on East Garner Road south of Raleigh.

The road was closed between Jones Sausage Road and Auburn Church Road as the new, longer bridge was constructed. The former bridge remains in use by construction crews.

The new structure was required to span the widened highway as a part of the project to add two additional lanes in each direction to a 12-mile stretch of I-40 from Southeast Raleigh to Clayton.

Having started in Fall 2018, the I-40 widening project is nearing its midpoint. Traffic has shifted to new inside lanes between I-440 and U.S. 70 Business to allow the outside lanes to be rehabbed, and work continues on the new flyover bridge from I-440 to I-40 East.
