ROCKY MOUNT – A section of South Halifax Road in Rocky Mount remains closed after last week’s storms damaged an underground culvert, forming a hole underneath the pavement.
The damage to a metal drainage pipe about 8 feet in diameter occurred on South Halifax Road south of Sunset Avenue. The N.C. Department of Transportation closed it Saturday.
“We are waiting for the water to recede, so we can go inside the culvert and fully inspect the damage and then determine a repair schedule,” said Randy Davis, the department’s bridge engineer for Highway Division 4.
The NCDOT has set up barricades and “road closed” signs for safety. People should not attempt to move them or drive around them.
The southbound detour sends drivers left onto Bethlehem Road, right onto Beechwood Drive and right onto Old Mill Road, returning to South Halifax Road. The northbound detour is the reverse route.
