GARNER — As a part of the Complete 540 project, N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to close Interstate 40 East at the U.S. 70 Clayton Bypass for several nights.
The closures are necessary for bridge girder installation on the western half of the new Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) bridge over the highway.
On the nights of Sept. 19-23, 26, 28-29, crews will close I-40 East from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day.
A detour will direct drivers to take Exit 309 for U.S. 70 East to N.C. 42 West to get back onto I-40 East.
Similar closures on I-40 West are planned for the week of Oct. 5 to complete work on the eastern half of the bridge.
Motorists need to slow down and pay extra attention as they travel through the work zone and allow extra time for the detour.
