Closure for Both Directions of I-40 at Aviation Parkway Tonight

MORRISVILLE â€“ N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to close both directions of Interstate 40 at Aviation Parkway tonight to safely pour the deck on the eastern half of the new bridge over the highway. The western half opened in April.

Weather permitting, crews will close I-40 from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. tomorrow.

The detour for I-40 will be very short as law enforcement will direct drivers up and down the on and off ramps at the Aviation Parkway interchange (Exit 285).

Drivers exiting I-40 West will still be able to turn right on Aviation Parkway to access RDU Airport.

Motorists on I-40 East wishing to access the airport should exit at Airport Boulevard (Exit 284) and turn left.

Traffic will also be closed on Aviation Parkway over I-40. Drivers can take McCrimmon Parkway and Airport Boulevard to get around the closure

Northbound motorists will be diverted onto I-40 East at the bridge. Drivers would then have to turn around at Harrison Avenue (Exit 287) and take I-40 West back to Aviation Parkway to continue north toward RDU.

Traffic heading south on Aviation Parkway will be diverted onto I-40 West at the bridge and can either turn around at Airport Boulevard (Exit 284) or take it to McCrimmon Parkway to return to Aviation Parkway.

Drivers on I-40 West wishing to access Aviation Parkway south of the I-40 interchange have two options during this closure:

  • Take Exit 284, turn left onto Airport Boulevard and left onto McCrimmon Parkway to reach Aviation Parkway
  • Take Exit 287, turn left onto Harrison Avenue, right onto Weston Parkway and then right onto Evans Road to reach Aviation Parkway.

Motorists need to slow down and pay extra attention as they travel through the work zone.
