New Drainage Coming to U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro

WILKESBORO — A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is slated to start a significant drainage project along U.S. 421 in an area known for drainage issues.

Crews from Triangle Grading & Paving may begin working the last week of November on the $4.9 million project that includes installing about 900 feet of 66-inch diameter welded steel pipe.  The contract calls for work to be completed by Nov. 30, 2021.

The new pipe will replace an existing 60-inch pipe.  About half of the new system will be installed along the north side of US 421 and the other half will be placed under U.S. 421 toward the Yadkin River.

Transportation officials advise drivers to slow down in the work zone and obey all posted signs.  The pipe will be installed by a trenchless method with a combination of jack-and-bore or tunneling.  Therefore, drivers should experience minimal inconvenience or lane closures from the project.
