I-40 Repairs Slated for Thursday Morning

CANTON – A short section of Interstate 40 East in Haywood County near the Buncombe County line will be reduced to one lane Thursday morning for repairs.

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close one lane of I-40 East at mile marker 34 in Canton starting at 9 a.m. so crews can resurface and repaint a 500-foot stretch of interstate damaged on Sunday.

Crews from Harrison Construction will need about four hours to resurface the lanes damaged when a tractor trailer hauling liquid mulch dye spilled its contents, which required the top layer of asphalt to be milled out. NCDOT crews will immediately follow the resurfacing by painting new lines.

Drivers may experience delays during the repair work Thursday morning when one of two lanes is open. Motorists may also use U.S. 19/23 as an alternative route. Transportation officials remind drivers to slow down, drive alert and obey all posted signs in the work zone.
