Nash County Culvert Upgrade Requires Temporary Closure

ROCKY MOUNT – State crews closed South Halifax Road over Polecat Branch in Nash County today to replace a crossline pipe with a larger culvert.

After a June storm damaged the pipe and roadway south of Sunset Avenue, the N.C. Department of Transportation made a temporary repair and reopened the road in July.

The NCDOT has gone back to the site to make a permanent repair that includes an upgraded culvert capable of handling more stormwater going underneath the roadway. The project will cost an estimated $275,000.

The road is expected to reopen by Dec. 15.

The southbound detour sends drivers left onto Bethlehem Road, right onto Beechwood Drive and right onto Old Mill Road, returning to South Halifax Road. The northbound detour is the reverse route.

Drivers who use South Halifax Road should anticipate a longer commute and use caution near the work zone.
