Bridge Demolitions Bring Overnight Interstate Closures

GARNER – Bridge demolitions as part of the widening project from Southeast Raleigh to Clayton will require some overnight closures of Interstate 40 East beginning tonight.

There will be 30-minute closures approaching the old White Oak Road bridge over the interstate so it can be taken down safely. They will be in place Sunday through Thursday nights between midnight and 5 a.m. for the next two weeks for the eastbound lanes, and then crews will put the same brief closures in place for the westbound side of the highway for the following two weeks. There are no closures planned for Friday or Saturday nights.

Elsewhere on the project, the contractor will also begin nightly complete closures of I-440 East between Poole Road and Rocky Quarry Road tonight for the next four weeks. This is to allow for the demolition of the old flyover bridge. These closures will also be in place Sunday through Thursday, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Since this will be a continuous closure each night, a detour route will be in place, sending I-440 East drivers to I-40 East to Jones Sausage Road to I-40 West.

Drivers need to slow down and use extra caution when going through the work zone. They also need to pay very close attention when approaching the highway closures.
