WINSTON-SALEM – A new bridge over the Norfolk Southern tracks near Smith Reynolds Airport is set to open this week.
N.C. Department of Transportation contractors closed Akron Drive between Glenn Avenue and Liberty Street in September 2019 to remove and replace the aged bridge.
The new bridge is set to open by the end of the day Friday, weather permitting. It was built to modern design standards and features classic arched railings, a wider deck and improved drainage.
Wright Brothers Construction Co. of Charleston, Tenn., completed the work under a $5.35 million contract.
