This Week at NCDOT: Airports Boost Economy, Basnight Bridge Award, NCDMV Planning Ahead

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Airports Contribute to NC Economy

North Carolina’s publicly owned airports contribute $61 billion to the state’s economy each year and support 373,000 jobs, according to a report released earlier this month by the department’s Division of Aviation. Airports and aviation-related jobs also provide $15 billion in personal income and contribute $2.5 billion in state and local tax revenues every year, based on 2019 data.

NCDOT creates the report every two years to help guide future investment in aviation infrastructure and provide a tool for recruiting companies.

Basnight Bridge Named Bridge of the Year

The Marc Basnight Bridge in Dare County has been named 2020’s ‘Bridge of the Year’ by American Infrastructure magazine, a leading industry publication.

The 2.8-mile bridge, which spans the Oregon Inlet on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, opened to traffic in February 2019.

The magazine praised the engineers who designed and built the bridge for overcoming the harsh coastal environment and rapidly changing sea conditions to create a structure built to last 100 years. To read the entire article, go here.

NCDMV: Plan Ahead

If you plan to visit the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles in 2021, make sure to plan ahead. Office visits are by appointment only, and all offices are already booked until late February and on into early March. But the DMV allows many services to be completed online, including license renewals and ordering a duplicate license or ID.
