Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette Tours, Judges Aviation Art Contest

Secretary of Transportation Eric Boyette and Deputy Secretary for Multi-Modal Transportation Julie White select their favorites in the final round of the 2021 Aviation Art Contest

RALEIGH – State Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette said he was impressed by what he saw when he helped judge North Carolina’s 2021 Aviation Art Contest.

Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, students across the state submitted nearly 800 pieces of art for the contest, which is managed by the N.C. Department of Transportation Division of Aviation.

“The skill and creativity on display here is spectacular,” said Boyette, who judged the contest during a visit to the Division of Aviation Hangar on Friday. “I’m glad these students got the chance to showcase their artistic talents and love of aviation despite what’s been a tough year for many.”

All students who live in or attend school in North Carolina and were born between Jan. 1, 2003 and Dec. 31, 2014 were eligible to participate by submitting their own artwork. Prizes for the top three works will be awarded to the artist and the artist’s school in three age groups: junior (ages 6-9), intermediate (10-13), and senior (14-17). Judges determine winners in each category based on creativity, artistic skill, and adherence to the theme. This year’s theme was ‘A Friendlier World with Air Sports.’

The North Carolina winners will be announced in the coming weeks, and their work forwarded to Washington, D.C. to be judged in the National Aviation Art Contest. The national winners’ artwork will go on to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale’s headquarters in Switzerland for international judging. Two NC Students advanced to the international round in each of the past two years.

More information about the 2021 North Carolina Aviation Art Contest can be found on the Division of Aviation’s website. The contest is paid for by the North Carolina Airports Association and its members.
