Fayetteville Roads Will Be Affected by Railroad Maintenance

FAYETTEVILLE – CSX Corp. intends to close six roads in or near downtown Fayetteville over the next month for routine track maintenance that will require drivers to take temporary detours.

The railroad is coordinating the closures with the city of Fayetteville and the N.C. Department of Transportation. The maintenance includes replacing worn-out wooden ties.

A train convoy with equipment and crews has rolled into town with the first track crossing closing this morning on Blount Street between Robeson and Winslow streets. Blount Street is scheduled to reopen Friday or Saturday.

The CSX contractor also plans to do track crossing maintenance at these other Fayetteville locations, closing these roads tentatively between mid-March and mid-April. CSX officials say the complexity of the work prevents them from setting dates to close each road:

  • Russell Street
  • Cumberland Street
  • Franklin Street
  • Moore Street
  • Whitfield Street

Barricades and detour signs will be erected for the affected closings.

Each crossing will be closed for about five days, depending on the weather.

Drivers should slow down, prepare for delays and watch for crews – and trains needed for the maintenance that may be blocking other intersections.
