Interstate 77 North Closure Scheduled Near Uptown

CHARLOTTE – Starting tonight, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will close  I-77 North near uptown to make repairs to the bridge taking Clarkson Street over the roadway. The bridge was struck by an over height vehicle in late February.

The structure was inspected and deemed safe, but repairs are needed to bring a damaged steel beam back to its original position. NCDOT will be working with Dan R. Dalton, Inc., a company out of the state of Washington that uses heat to straighten the bridge beam back into place. There are few companies in the country qualified for this specialized type of work.

Travel lanes on I-77 North will be closed each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the next two weeks, except for the Easter holiday. Closures will be scaled back from midnight to 5 a.m. from Thursday night until Tuesday morning, April 6.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured to the collector lanes at exit 9 (John Belk Freeway/Wilkinson Boulevard) back to I-77 North.
