Fayetteville Fuel Spill Requires Road Repair

FAYETTEVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation secured late today a contract to repair the pavement damaged by a fuel spill caused by a crash on Country Club Drive (U.S. 401 Business).

The crash early Thursday morning between a gasoline tanker truck and a motor vehicle caused the tanker to overturn and rupture the tank. The Fayetteville Fire Department's hazardous materials unit and a regional HazMat team responded to the scene. About 2,000 gallons of gasoline spilled, Fayetteville officials said.

The busy thoroughfare just east of Murchison Road had remained closed until about 4:30 p.m. today, when NCDOT's traffic services reopened the outside (right) lane in each direction.

A Robeson County paving contractor will remove the top layer of asphalt across the five lanes for about 200 feet, then repave it. The pavement must be replaced because the spilled gasoline can weaken and crack the asphalt. The contractor will begin mobilizing equipment tonight.

NCDOT expects the contractor to complete the repaving and reopen all lanes by 6 p.m. Friday.

The final cost of the repairs will be determined later.
