NCDOT Seeks Comments on Airport Boulevard Extension in Morrisville

MORRISVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation would like public feedback on the proposed extension of Airport Boulevard between Garden Square Lane and N.C. 54/Chapel Hill Road.

The purpose of the proposed project is to fill the gap in the Airport Boulevard corridor, thereby enhancing connectivity between Davis Drive and Chapel Hill Road, Research Triangle Park, Interstate 40 and RDU Airport.

The proposed roadway would consist of two 12-foot lanes in each direction and a 20-foot-wide raised median. A five-foot sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot multi-use path on the south side will also improve overall multimodal traffic mobility throughout the corridor.

The Town of Morrisville was awarded funding for Phase 1 of this extension (between Garden Square Lane and Church Street) through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's Locally Administered Projects program. NCDOT Highway Division 5 will manage the project.

Due to COVID-19, NCDOT has suspended in-person meetings and instead will host a live virtual meeting on April 20 at 7 p.m. People are encouraged to visit the project webpage to view a project video and other information about the project prior to the virtual meeting, and to access the link to join the meeting, or find out how to dial in using their phone or video-conferencing system.

NCDOT accepts comments throughout all phases of project design and construction. To have your comments included in planning activities for this phase of the project, they should be submitted by May 14.  Comments may be submitted via the project webpage, emailed to Airport-Blvd-Extension@PublicInput.com, or people can call in a question or comment by dialing 984-205-6615 (enter project code 9809).

Phase 1 of the project has an estimated $5.25 million total cost and is scheduled to be awarded next July.
