New Bridge Opens Over I-26

HENDERSONVILLE – It’s in with the new, then out with the old on Brookside Camp Road in Hendersonville.

A new bridge on Brookside Camp Road over Interstate 26 in Henderson County will open on Thursday. The old bridge will be sawed into pieces on Thursday night and sections will be removed starting Sunday night while one direction of interstate is closed.

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is conducting these operations as part of the I-26 Widening projects from U.S. 64 in Henderson County to Brevard Road in Buncombe County.

Crews will open the bridge on Thursday with a small checklist of tasks remaining. The new bridge provides space for the I-26 expansion under the bridge.

The contractor will close both left lanes of I-26 on Thursday night starting about 9 p.m. to slice the bridge into sections that will be removed starting Sunday night.

I-26 East will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday and Monday nights from U.S. 25 Business (Exit 44) to Upward Road (Exit 53). Traffic will be detoured in the Integrated Corridor Management system — which provides longer green lights on the marked route —along U.S. 25 South (Asheville Highway) through Hendersonville to Upward Road and back to I-26.

I-26 West will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights from U.S. 64 (Exit 49) to U.S. 25 Business (Exit 44). Traffic will be detoured, again with the longer green lights, on U.S. 64 through Hendersonville to U.S. 25 North.

These plans are weather dependent and subject to change. Transportation officials advise drivers obey all posted traffic signs and remain alert in work zones.
